Make your production as Easy and effective as possible

INCENTIVES & GRANTS

Alberta offers a competitive advantage for filmmakers through its rural film and television tax credit, which provides up to a 30% refundable incentive on eligible production costs when filming in designated rural areas like Didsbury within the Mountain View film office region

This incentive is designed to encourage productions to film outside major urban centres, rewarding projects that bring economic activity to smaller communities. Eligible expenses typically include Alberta-based labour, goods, and services directly tied to production—helping to significantly reduce overall budgets.

For filmmakers, this means more value on screen: stretching production dollars further, accessing diverse and film-ready locations, and benefiting from a supportive, streamlined environment. When paired with Didsbury’s integrated studio, sound facilities, and versatile locations, the 30% incentive makes it an efficient, cost-effective choice for productions of all sizes.

Rules & Regulations: Alberta Film Incentives

Alberta offers a refundable Film and Television Tax Credit for eligible screen-based productions filming in the province. Productions may qualify for either a 22% or 30% tax credit on eligible Alberta production costs.

To qualify, productions must generally have total production costs of at least $499,999 CAD, be a new production, and complete a portion of principal photography or key animation in Alberta. To access the 30% rural and remote filming rate, at least 75% of Alberta principal photography days must take place in a designated rural or remote location.

Eligible projects must apply through the Province of Alberta’s online portal and may apply up to 120 days after starting principal photography in Alberta. Once approved, the production must begin Alberta principal photography within six months of receiving its Authorization Letter and complete final deliverables within the required program timelines.

Alberta also offers a separate Post-Production, Visual Effects and Digital Animation Grant, which supports Alberta companies using Alberta labour for post-production services, including editing, visual effects, digital animation, sound, and finishing work. This grant can help strengthen the value of completing production and post-production work in Alberta.

Important Note: Incentive eligibility depends on project structure, timing, eligible expenses, production location, and provincial approval. Productions should confirm requirements directly with the Province of Alberta before applying.
